Now, let’s get to it! It’s time to talk about some of the top stories of the week, followed by a few explanations in Portuguese!
Our first story is about the entertainment industry! E pode ser um pouco chocante para nós fãs da Netflix! Nem tudo são flores e até mesmo esses nomes do entretenimento podem estar envolvidos em algumas coisas chocantes.
The Chosen One was one of the many shows being produced by Netflix, which came to pause after the tragic death of two actors on Thursday the 16th of June in a car crash in Mexico. Four other crew members were also in the vehicle, surviving with serious injuries.
Friends of the two actors and one of the writers of the show are demanding further investigation because apparently, the whole crew had been complaining about the conditions of their transportation for a long time, they stated that the van had “worn-out tires, noisy brakes, loose steering wheel, not all seat belts worked, easily identifiable signs of danger,”.
The writer commented on the fact that, in the art world, it’s not always easy to get work, especially with giants like Netflix, so the actors kept on working under those dangerous conditions.
Netflix has not commented on the events and allegations.
Ninguém merece trabalhar desse jeito né? Que coisa horrível. Bom, aqui você viu os pneus da van sendo descritos como “worn-out”, ou seja, desgastados. Usamos esse termo para descrever veículos, móveis, roupas, eletrônicos, enfim, todas as coisas que se desgastam com o tempo. Se você tem um tênis que você gosta muito e já usou pra caramba, com certeza ele já tá um tanto quanto desgastado e você pode descrevê-lo como “worn-out sneakers”, e eu tenho uma “worn-out jacket”, uma jaqueta desgastada de tanto que eu já usei!
Our next story is about a tragedy that happened this month, which is being talked about all around the globe, the murder of Dom Philips and Bruno Pereira.
Dom Philips was a British journalist who lived in Salvador, Brazil. He went to the Amazon to work on one of his books about the preservation of nature and indigenous communities. To help him during his journey, his interviews, and his research, he had the company of Bruno Pereira, one of the most successful allies of indigenous preservation in Brazil.
After spending two days in the Javari region, the pair was last seen returning on the 5th of June. Three days after their disappearance, figures from all over the world started to pressure Brazilian authorities to do more and try harder. Manifestations happened both in Brazil and in England.
The worst had unfortunately happened and their bodies were found on the 17th of June. The whole situation brought light to the terribly aggressive situation in that region, which includes illegal fishing, poaching, and other environmental crimes.
Finally, three suspects have been arrested for the murders, as well as five others who may have helped to hide the bodies. The financial interests of those who are involved in illegal activities seem to be the main motive, and this same motive is becoming an increasing risk to the lives of reporters all around the world who cover stories related to environmental crimes.
Nessa reportagem, foi usado o “which” como uma ligação entre duas frases, mas um tipo de ligação bem específico! O “which” é uma maneira de você introduzir mais um detalhe muito importante sobre o objeto ou pessoa sobre quem você está falando. Nesse caso o objeto era “the terribly aggressive situation” e o detalhe que adicionamos foi “includes illegal fishing”. Você poderia usar para dizer, por exemplo “the red car, which is in the garage, is for sale”, que é o carro vermelho, que está na garagem, está a venda”. Então o “which” é traduzido como “que”, introduzindo mais um detalhe.
Essa foi uma dica um pouco mais gramatical, e quando o assunto é gramática, é bem importante tentar aprender da maneira menos complicada possível, focando na prática e na realidade do cotidiano! And last but not least, we have some news in the music industry! One of the giants has finally released her long-awaited single, and people are talking about it.
Beyoncé, one of the biggest record-breaking divas in activity today, has finally released a new single and is soon to release a whole new album. The last time she dropped an album was in 2016, so it’s been a hot minute.
The house music slash disco-inspired track was a breath of fresh air for her fans and was received with a lot of praise, and it was actually quite a surprise. The single and the album had no promotion whatsoever prior to last week, when the star caused quite a commotion by deleting her Instagram profile, only to come back a few days later promoting her new work.
The song “Break my Soul” was released first on Tidal, her husband’s music streaming service.
Bom, agora já sabemos o que vai tocar nas rádios nas próximas semanas. Aqui na reportagem usamos uma expressão um pouco diferente! “A hot minute”, que aqui está sendo usado como “muito tempo”, pode ser usado com o sentido oposto em situações mais formais, significando “um pouquinho de tempo”. Mas, como no cotidiano a fala casual é mais comum, você vai acabar vendo “a hot minute” sendo muito mais usado como “muito tempo”. É bem comum dizer, por exemplo, “it’s been a hot minute since I went to the movies”, com o sentido de “faz um tempão que eu não vou no cinema”.
