Dialogue:

Maria: That’s your fifth cup of coffee today. What gives?
Dina:
I’m exhausted. I haven’t been sleeping at all.
Maria:
Is the baby keeping you awake?
Dina:
Yeah. She has colic, so she doesn’t sleep. And if she doesn’t sleep, I don’t sleep.
Maria:
Can’t you nap during the day?
Dina:
I tried, but the neighbors are renovating, and it sounds like they’re in the house.
Michelle:
Why don’t you come over tomorrow? I’ll take care of the baby, and you can sleep.
Dina:
Michelle, you’re a godsend.

New expressions and Vocabulary!

At all

Sometimes you need to emphasize that something does not happen or you might need to point out the total absence of something. In these cases, adding this adverb to negative structures is the way to do that. It makes that idea of absence very clear and intense, so let’s look at some more examples:

I haven’t studied for this test at all, my grades are going to be horrible.

Kelly brought no food at all, let’s give her one of our sandwiches.

His company is in trouble so he didn’t work at all this week.

You can also use it in questions when you want to know whether or not something happened or if something exists:

Do you have any houseplants at all?

Has she traveled at all this year?

Does the printer work at all?

Renovating

The verb “renovate” describes the idea of improving a house or building, it can refer to decorative changes but especially structural changes to buildings, so it is a noisy thing! Check out some examples:

We are thinking of renovating the bathroom this year.

What part of the house do you want to renovate?

They are renovating the meeting rooms on the third floor.

You can also use the noun “renovation”:

This renovation will take about one month.

I don’t like renovations, they are too messy.

Who paid for the renovation this time?

Godsend

Do you ever feel that a person or a thing is a blessing? You can say that someone who helps you with something very important is a godsend, something sent by God that makes you feel very thankful. Have a look at these sentences:

This job was a godsend, I don’t know what I would do without it.

My friend Beth is a godsend, she taught me how to make this.

The book is going to be a godsend, it will give us a good idea of how things work.

Remember that you can listen to this episode as many times as you wish! You can also read along, and enjoy this extra content. That way, you’ll be able to understand these new structures and use them in conversations in the future. Keep in mind that the more daily contact you have with the English language, the better you’ll get, so make sure you’re here for our next episode!

Nós nos vemos na próxima! See you next time!
