Now, how about we get started? In this episode, we’re going to talk about some of the hottest stories of this week, and we’ll get some explanations in Portuguese!
We’re starting this episode talking about her, of course. One of the world’s most famous paintings, “La Gioconda”, AKA “Mona Lisa” was attacked in the Louvre Museum last week.
Where to begin? A man wearing a wig passed through security in a wheelchair and tried to smash the protective glass that encases the painting. That being bulletproof, let’s just say the guy wasn’t successful. Unhappy with his failed attempt, the man decided to throw what seems to be a cake at it, YES, A CAKE. The man threw a cake at Mona Lisa.
“Think of the Earth”, the attacker called out. “There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this”, he justified.
Security escorted him out of the museum, where it’s been displayed since 1797, and thankfully Leonardo da Vinci’s 16th-century masterpiece wasn’t damaged thanks to the bulletproof glass that was installed after previous attacks.
No wonder it needs that kind of protection. The 77-centimeter painting’s been through a lot over the centuries. Besides being stolen and damaged, it was thrown paint and mugs at. It was even placed in kings’ bathrooms before being placed at the museum. Poor Mona Lisa. Let’s hope she has some peace and quiet for a while.
No comecinho dessa história, você me escutou dizendo AKA. Essa é uma das siglas que são usadas na fala, de forma bem comum. AKA significa Also Known As, mas é mais comum usar as letras do que o que elas significam. Uma outra sigla que é comum na fala é ASAP, que pode ser pronunciada ASAP ou A S A P. Ela significa As Soon As Possible, e você vai ouvir a sigla em uso tanto em ambientes informais quanto formais. FYI não é usada em contextos formais, mas em conversas entre amigos, é possível que você escute, ao invés de For Your Information.

Last week we talked about season 4 volume 1 being released on Friday the 27th, and now here I come with what went on during the week. Stranger Things 4’ Volume 1 logged the biggest premiere weekend ever for a Netflix original series with 286.79 Million hours viewed, surpassing Bridgerton Season 2, which drew 193M.
The first volume has only seven episodes, but all of them are more than an hour long, so it might take you a little longer to binge-watch this one.
Fans are now eagerly waiting for the second volume that will be released on July 1st and will have only two episodes. But don’t worry, because they’ll be more than an hour and the last one will be more than two and a half hours long. That’s basically a Marvel movie, so I guess Netflix will have time enough to answer the questions that came up on volume 1 finale.
Excited already? Oh, and if you wait till the end of the last episode, you’ll find a hidden teaser of what to expect of the next volume. I’m sure that if you haven’t realized that, you’ll be coming back to see what you missed.
Em inglês, a palavra “long” significa “longo”. Mas nós temos outros usos pra essa palavra, como aqui nessa história. Nós falamos que os episódios são “an hour long”, ou “two and a half hours long”. Aqui, o significado da palavra muda, se transformando em uma indicação de duração. Significa que os episódios têm uma hora de duração, ou duas horas e meia de duração. Se você não quiser usar essa palavra, você pode dizer “the episode lasts an hour”, or “that episode lasts over two hours”. Mas o mais comum é usar “long” mesmo.
And last, but not least, let’s try to imagine what you think a big plant is. I’m sure you’ll be surprised to know that it’s not even close to what you imagined. The world’s largest plant was found in what is now known as Shark Bay, just off the Australian west coast.
A single 4,500-year-old seagrass spread over 200 square kilometers of underwater seafloor. And how much is that? “Just” about 28,000 soccer fields.
Scientists from the University of Western Australia and Flinders University initially thought the plant was a meadow of different sea grasses, but genetic testing proved otherwise.
The species is commonly found along the southern coastlines of Australia and the scientist first thought that all of it consisted of more than one plant, but samples taken from sites that were 180 km apart suggested there were not multiple specimens of it.
“We thought ‘what the hell is going on here?’” said Dr Martin Breed, an ecologist at Flinders University. “We were completely stumped.”
The one plant now spreads out like a meadow, providing habitat for a huge array of marine species including turtles, dolphins, crabs and fish.
A palavra “meadow” significa “campo”, “prado”, ou “campina”. É o substantivo que define uma expansão de grama, mato, de natureza selvagem. Imagine os campos que você vê quando está no interior, cheio de grama natural, pequenas plantas, que são o habitat de milhares de pequenas criaturas. Esses campos são formados naturalmente por muitas plantas diversas, mas aqui, os cientistas descobriram que o campo, a campina, o prado debaixo d’água é composto por uma planta só.
