Dialogue:

Julie: You’re not ready yet? We’re gonna be late!
Sophie: Shoot. Sorry, I lost track of time. I’ll get dressed quickly and we can still make it.
Julie: Do you wanna get a raincheck? You look stressed.
Sophie: No, I could use a night out with the girls. I need to decompress.
Julie: What’s got you so frazzled?
Sophie: I’ve been trying to cancel my cable all day.
Julie: Uh-oh. How long were you on the phone?
Sophie: Three hours! And I still got the cable!

New expressions and Vocabulary!

– Shoot

If you don’t like to say bad words, don’t worry! There are many words in English that are used instead of swear words, expressing the same feeling. In our dialogue, we have a very common one, “shoot” is an expression of frustration or exasperation, used when you notice that you accidentally made a mistake, for example. It’s very similar to “droga!” in Portuguese:

Shoot! I left my cell phone in the car.
Shoot
, we forgot to call Derek to ask him to bring drinks!
My brother is here?
Shoot! I didn’t tell him about the event.

– Could use

This common expression is a way of indicating what would be a good solution to a problem or state, as we saw in the dialogue! Check out some other examples:

I’m so tired, I could use a nap right now.
My bathroom
could use a renovation, it’s not looking very good.
Money has been going so fast, I
could really use a raise.
You look like you
could use a snack, go grab something in the kitchen.

– Frazzled

Again we have one of those things that we can express with many different words! This is a description of someone who looks extremely tired and stressed at the same time. Who hasn’t seen someone like that or been that person? But of course, be careful when using these terms, since it can be a little offensive depending on the situation. Let’s see some other possible words:

You look frazzled today, do you need some help?
Tim is
worn out, let’s try to do this without him.
I’m
dead tired so I’m going home early.
We finished the project this morning so everyone is
spent.

George looks pretty beat, are you sure he is coming to the party?

Remember that you can listen to this episode as many times as you wish! You can also read along, and enjoy this extra content. That way, you’ll be able to understand these new structures and use them in conversations in the future. Keep in mind that the more daily contact you have with the English language, the better you’ll get, so make sure you’re here for our next episode!

See you next time!
